Chief
Chief was a 24-year-old horse who had been active in the hunt club for more than a decade. As he aged, he began to experience significant breathing issues and eventually could walk only short distances.
If he was ever to regain any semblance of an active lifestyle, Chief would require corrective surgery. However, due to the complications of anesthesia and his advanced age, the procedure posed a significant health risk.
Even if he survived the surgery, he would require diligent care, since his tracheotomy would require cleaning at least twice a day.
When I communicated with Chief about the possibility of his surgery, he made it clear that he was willing to take his chances. “It’s all or nothing!” he boldly told me.
With great risk came great reward. The surgery was a success, and Chief lived for another four happy and active years.
